Introduced to Western Europe by the Moors, azulejos (white and blue ceramic tiles) were adopted by the Portuguese when their king, Manuel I, then visiting the Alhambra in Granada, was amazed by the beauty of the Moorish tiles. . The king, amazed at such beauty, immediately ordered that the walls of his own palace be decorated with decorative tiles. In Azul, you are an artist and lay the tiles: you beautify the royal palace of Evora.
In the game, players alternate turns by drafting colored tiles that come from merchants to place them on their personal board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they placed the tiles on the palace. Additional points are scored for creating particular shapes and collecting families. Wasted resources lower points. The player with the most points will win!
